Dr. Gengler’s research and teaching interests include the sociology of health and illness, the sociology of emotion, the interactional reproduction of inequality, and ethnographic research methods. Her book, “Save My Kid”: How Families of Critically Ill Children Cope, Hope, and Negotiate an Unequal Healthcare System was published in January 2020 with New York University Press. Her research has also been published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Social Problems, Social Psychology Quarterly, Symbolic Interaction, and the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, among other outlets. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the American Sociological Association, and has received awards from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction and the Society for the Study of Social Problems Theory Division. She regularly teaches principles of sociology alongside upper-level seminars on health, inequality, and emotion.
