Professor Gómez Cervantes’ work explores how state actions and public policies shape the daily lives, well-being, and futures of immigrants, their families, and their communities. Her book,
Illegality in the Heartland: Latinidad, Indigeneity, and Immigration Policies during Times of Hate, critically examines the impact of immigration policies on the experiences of Latin American immigrants living in the Midwest. Professor Gómez Cervantes has received prestigious awards in support of her scholarship, including from the National Science Foundation, the Institute for Research on Poverty, the Arnold Ventures Foundation, the University of California Postdoctoral President’s Fellows, the American Sociological Association Minority Fellows, and the Ford Foundation.
